8 Tasty Topping Ideas for Sweet Potato Toast

Whether your resolutions include focusing on health, cooking more at home, reducing your waste, or even trying out Whole30, incorporating more veggies into your lifestyle is always a plus. One of my favorite gluten free, dairy free, no sugar added, vegan, paleo… you name it recipes is sweet potato toast.

The beauty in sweet potato toast is that it's really a “choose your own adventure” kind of meal. You can make it sweet or savory, vegan or not, you can make them ahead of time or in the moment, and it works well with almost anything you have on hand. There’s really no right or wrong way to make these, and they always turn out delicious.

Here’s the general process, and a few of my favorite topping combinations!

Sweet Potato Toast 8 Ways

The process:

  1. Select a thick/wide sweet potato so you can create a bunch of slices.

  2. Slice your sweet potato the long way into 1/4- to 1/2-inch thick slices. You can use a knife (carefully!) or a mandolin (suggested, if you have one). Food waste tip: save the ends or any odd shapes/pieces in a bin in the freezer with other veggie scraps to use to make a vegetable stock base!

  3. If you’re meal prepping, you may choose at this point to store the raw slices of sweet potato in a Stasher bag to make later, or even freeze them if you want to make a bunch.

  4. When you are ready to cook, you can either stick a slice in your toaster or toaster oven until golden brown, or bake it at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes (or until fork tender). If you want to skip the cooking part later, toast or bake a bunch ahead of time and stash 'em until you're ready to re-heat and eat.

  5. Add your toppings!

Now that our toasts are prepped and ready, here are a handful of my favorite topping combinations:

  • Smoked salmon + avocado + sesame seed sprinkle

  • Avocado + chilli powder + black sesame seeds + Maldon (or pink) sea salt (the perfect avocado toast replacement!)

  • Baby kale + radish + tahini drizzle

  • Nut cheese + pumpkin seeds + cinnamon

  • Pesto + chicken

  • Almond butter + cinnamon (+ banana if you’d like!)

  • Poached egg + smoked salmon + avocado + cilantro

  • Coconut butter + cacao nibs

These combinations are just the tip of the iceberg! Most things that taste good on toast taste good on sweet potato toasts, so reduce food waste by grabbing what ever veggies or leftovers you have and using those. Fresh herbs are often a lovely addition as well. You can even slice them the short way to make smaller sweet potato bites, which would be a great appetizer when entertaining. Enjoy!
