How to Build an Eco-Friendly Beach Picnic

Are you ready to enjoy a day of sun and sand — without all the gross single-use stuff? We get it; thinking about picnics normally includes a whole lot of plastic-wrapped snacks, disposable utensils, napkins, and more. But with a few simple swaps, you can ditch all that for reusable alternatives that are just as convenient and help enjoy a memorable, eco-conscious beach outing.

All you need are a few simple steps to pack the ultimate sustainable beach picnic basket.

DIY food containers for picnic

Step 1: Pack Snacks in Reusables

Start by preparing your favorite beach-friendly foods ahead of time. By giving yourself plenty of time to meal prep, you avoid that last-minute rush that may encourage you to pick up a plastic-wrapped snack instead.

From sandwiches and salads to fruit slices and snacks, our reusable silicone bags are perfect for keeping your food fresh and secure. (And did we mention safe from sand?!) The leak-free seal ensures no spills in your basket and can keep food safe from the elements at the beach. Don’t forget to also pack cloth napkins, utensils, and other things you may need!

Step 2: Build a Portable Cooler

Need to keep beverages or perishable items cool? A super easy and fun way to do that is by making a portable “cooler” with a Stasher bowl! We recommend using a larger bowl like our 6-Cup or 8-Cup. Simply fill the bowl with ice to keep your drinks and snacks chilled throughout the day. Stasher bowls are durable and easy to carry, making them a versatile addition to your beach picnic setup.

Step 3: DIY Your Favorite Snacks

Get creative with your beach snacks by replacing plastic-packaged treats with reusable alternatives. For example, instead of single-use push pops, create your own DIY push pops using a silicone Pocket bag. Fill the bags with your favorite frozen treats, seal them, and enjoy an eco-friendly dessert at the beach. For the how-to, check out our Instagram.

Step 4: Remember to Pack Out Trash

One of the key principles of eco-friendly picnicking is leaving no trace. Be sure to pack in and out all your trash, including any food wrappers or disposable items. Stasher bags are reusable and totally washable, so you can easily clean them after use and avoid adding to beach litter. We love to keep an extra Half Gallon bag handy for packing out trash and even picking up litter!

It may be worth keeping some more Stasher bags on hand for things like storing wet swimsuits, keeping your phone dry, or storing leaky items like sunscreen tubes.

By incorporating Stasher reusable bags into your beach picnic routine, you can make a positive impact on the environment while enjoying delicious food and drinks. Remember to pack responsibly, minimize waste, and embrace reusable alternatives for a greener beach experience.
